Religion 101: What’s so Fun about Hate, War and Fundamentalism?

It’s an amazing world in which we live, this slow cool world down here, up here, of molecules making love, and atoms doing time, of spatio-temporal flows and eddies, with dervishes and rock bands and salad greens and rocket science all swirling and whirling at less than the speed of light, more like the speed of sound defining this dimension with all its percussion and repercussions, quarks tachyons leptons Higgs bosons and an infinite number of other particles all holding hands…

…as if they really existed, probably all read the same books, mixing and matching and flirting and hurting and creating bacteria and other multi-celled species, with emotions you can feel, and frequencies you can smell taste touch see and hear, so God said go forth and multiply but instead we went forth and divided…

Enter consciousness and the game gets dicey, either a blessing or curse however you look at it, the awareness of self reflected in a gajillion tiny mirrors enlightening you informing you and haunting you till death do you part, and sending mixed signals, measured logarithmically, the slightest slights magnified to convenient maxims and maximums by speed and memory…

So I’ve been accused of ‘jihadist’ tendencies, something my mother would definitely not approve of, she the resolute Christian Scientist knowing the truth and the truth making her free while the rest of us struggle along in our ignorance, simply because I prize reconciliation above all else, and understanding its hand-maiden, for the mutual benefit of opposing parties and assorted frat houses, prevention the key to misunderstandings, freedom of speech now gone ebola-like viral the better to get in your face…

I’ve read the Qur’an, true, and it’s a great book, like the Third Testament to the Bible, and maybe the best of the lot, certainly the equal to the New Testament, and the Vedas, and the various Buddhist books of living and dying that inform the practice. What about the Old Testament/Septuagint/Torah? Meh… not so much, since that’s mostly ethnic cleansing, a history of violence and racism slow to be undone…

So does that make me a ‘jihadist’? Maybe in the larger sense of ‘struggle’, a struggle of consciousness, through the long dark night of the soul, but hardly what the average fundamentalist has in mind, with his beard and his Gillettes and bad after-shave never used, I just a messenger, not as lucky as the Pope to wear the robes of office, crying in the wilderness for peace and sanity…

You don’t have to study the Darwinci code too long or too hard to know that this species is something pretty special, capable of the highest heights of science or philosophy or the lowest depths of ultimate self-destruction, a species not only unlikely to be found on any other planet but not likely to ever occur again on this one, all hubris aside, the arrogance of assuming we’re special far less than the arrogance of assuming that of course this is normal, no it’s not…. normal would be silence punctuated by extreme violence… hmmm, wait a minute…

So why do people become ‘jihadists’ and take up the armed fight against infidels? Much of the current scuttlebutt suggests that they don’t, really, apart from the more blatant ‘Johnny Jihads’ among them, most just looking for a gig, a gig with a meal and a meaning, preferably on the right side of history, can’t say that happy-go-lucky Americans with their passions and their prejudices have got it all figured out any better, driving over climate cliffs like sheep with the latest model speedsters and smartphones…

My only concern is preservation of the species, the fact that featherless bipeds came this way this far too precious to take for granted, coulda been bears or dogs or elephants, but no, great apes spun off this aberrant gene that proceeded to self-reflection and beyond…

Now here we stand at the crossroads, refusing to get out of our cars, a drive-thru apocalypse, as if the future were to be found in a four-door sedan, but I doubt it, the future is more likely to be found in a self-contained city, a city of God as Mother nature, fully informed by texts and treaties, choosing the womb as symbol and Nature as nurture…

When all God’s children are raised together as babes in arms, then animosities will fade and hatred will fail, and previous paradigms will have no meaning, just like my adopted orphaned puppy and kitty cast aside and tossed together for warmth against the cold, never taught cat stuff and dog stuff, just survival of the fattest, then the lion will truly lie down with the lamb, may God’s love wisdom and discipline be with us, the great holy trinity of Buddha, Christ and the Prophet three faces of divinity…
